Susan Matta of Austin hails
from Sandpoint, Idaho, a small town nestled high in the
Rocky Mountains of Northern Idaho. Sandpoint boasts a hardy outdoor lifestyle,
and Susan Matta of Austin
loves it there. But after graduating from the University of Idaho
in May 2010 with a degree in Art and Design, she knew she needed more than
Sandpoint had to offer.
Right after graduation, Susan Matta of Austin
caught a big break when she landed a job at the Jack
S. Blanton
Museum and research center in Austin, Texas.
A part of the University of Texas at Austin, the Blanton is one of the biggest
university museums in the United
States. Established in 1963, the museum is
home to more than 18,000 works from the United
States, Europe, and Latin America.
The Blanton has, in short, almost everything an up-and-coming art professional
could ask for.
The museum’s holdings were originally stored in a campus art
building until a new facility opened in 1972. An even newer, $12 million
facility opened in the spring of 2006. It is here that Susan Matta of Austin now works. She
readily concedes she has only just begun to explore the museum’s vast holdings.
The museum is recognized for its collection of European paintings, its modern
and contemporary American and Latin American art, and a comprehensive
collection of prints and drawings. Susan Matta of Austin says she is excited by all the
diversity that the museum has to offer.
